I just can’t tell you how DARN IMPORTANT phrasal verbs are for English learners in general, which is why I created a whole section for them on this website. I have taught hundreds of advanced students over the past 7 years and what I have realized is that most of them are never comfortable using these phrasal verbs, either because they are not sure about the meaning of the phrasal verb or because they simply do not know the phrasal verb ever existed. Whatever the case is, the result is the same:
No fluency in English!
Now, although all phrasal verbs are important depending on the situation you’re using them in, there are 8 very common BE phrasal verbs which you are bound to hear every day. SERIOUSLY! So why not memorize them! By BE phrasal verbs, I mean:
am
are + PREPOSITION
is
Ok then! Let’s check them out and see if they ring a bell:
1-I’m off…
I’m off to the city
=
I’m going to the city
Can you guess what these mean then? I’m off to bed! OR I’m off to work.
I can also say…
I’m off the market
=
I’m married and I’m not dating any men/women anymore
BUT
if I say…
I’m off work today
=
I’m not working today, I have a day off
Ok! How about if I say…
I’ve been off alcohol for a week.
=
I haven’t drunk any alcohol for a week!
